Abstract
Sinus augmentation via the lateral window approach is an effective technique to increase bone height for implant placement in an atrophic posterior maxilla. Despite the high success rate, potential complications include perforation
of the Schneiderian membrane, massive bleeding, infection, and implant displacement into the sinus. These
complications are related to the anatomical variations of sinus and the preexisting antral pathologies. When a patient
is scheduled to undergo sinus augmentation, proper preoperative evaluation is critical for minimizing postoperative
adverse events. Careful, detailed history taking and clinical and radiological examinations will reduce the chances of
complications. Therefore, the aim of this literature review is to evaluate antral conditions and anatomical features
predisposed to complications during the sinus augmentation procedure. This report also discusses possible treatment
strategies for the management of these antral conditions and surgical complications.
